There are no accidents in film - whatever happens, whatever unfolds before you on the screen – is entirely intentional. Director Raju Murugan’s Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham might not have been a commercial success, but it has a cult following among those looking for unusual, fresh content. It's an enthralling story of love and revenge told in an intense manner with some fantastic cinematography. As always happens in Murugan’s movies, the narrative crux is a hopelessly intense love story. In Vallavanukku..., it revolves around the protagonist Ashok (Neil Nitin Mukesh) and his deep attraction towards a beautiful girl whom he sees for the first time at a wedding party. She dances to a slow number with utmost grace and looks quite unlike any other girl that he has seen. He instantly falls in love with her, yet remains unsure of her identity thanks to a mask that she is wearing. He only discovers the lady’s name later on – she is Suganya (newcomer Vani Bhojan). Ashok nurses his sweetheart despite being ruthlessly bullied by the entire fraternity. He is relentless in his pursuit of Suganya, yet she turns out to be a shrewd plotter who has some very sinister plans of her own. Murugan’s films (like the director himself) are marked by their intense pathos, and Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham is no exception. Ashok’s desperate attempts to woo Suganya are full of emotion, even though he is literally tortured by his buddies in the process. The use of close-ups on Mukesh’s face (like when he tries to hold back tears on seeing that Suganya keeps rejecting him) is wonderfully haunting. Murugan’s work in Vallavanukku... is also remarkable when it comes to the visuals. The mood is set early on in the movie when Ashok visits Suganya’s house for an early morning swim in the pool. The intensely green lawn with its sprinklers, the blue-green pool, the yellow tiles on the walls and that one person who has just returned from her morning jog – everything appears totally fresh and evocative. Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham is a simple story of love gone wrong - but it has some nice twists in its journey too. For one, the three women in the movie (Suganya, Sunaina and Chandrika) prove to be the most intriguing. Mukesh is at his best when he plays a heartbroken lover, and Vani Bhojan is pure fire in her brief role as a shrewd antagonist. The characters the director introduces are the ones that make this a fascinating watch. A film of Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham was released in Tamil on 25 November 2013. The audio was released on 15 May 2014 which coincided with Valentine's Day. It had been made on a budget of 8 crore without any stars. cfa1e77820
